There’s nothing quite like camping with your kids. It’s loud. It’s dirty. Someone always forgets a sock. But we keep going back.
I’ve spent over 50 nights under the stars with my boys. Just us, the trees, and a Jeep full of snacks. Somewhere along the way, I figured out what actually works. What keeps them excited.
What keeps me sane. These aren’t big epic adventures. They’re quick getaways, usually planned last-minute. But they’ve become some of our best memories.
Whether you’re a seasoned camper or just getting started, here are 8 simple hacks that make camping with kids easier, more fun, and something everyone actually wants to do again.
1. Say Yes More Often
One of the biggest hacks? Just go. The boys wanted to camp at 4 PM, and we were on the road an hour later.

Having a repeatable gear system and a go-to location makes last-minute trips not just possible, but stress-free.
2. Keep It Local, But Make It Feel Big
We don’t drive far. Usually just to Cleveland National Forest. But once we’re there? Everything matters.

A 10-minute walk becomes a jungle trek. A pond turns into a secret base. They come home talking like they crossed the Rockies.
It’s not about miles. It’s about magic.
3. Feed Them Fast
Mac and cheese. Always. No menus. No recipes. Just the good stuff in one pot. Snacks? Whatever fits in the glovebox. Marshmallows if we remember.

The boys know the drill. Stir the noodles, don’t burn the pan.
Suddenly, dinner’s not just food—it’s a mission.
4. Fire, the Easy Way
Wood fires are romantic. Until you’re choking on smoke. We pack a propane fire pit. Push a button, instant warmth.
No sparks, no ash, no hunting for dry sticks in the dark.
It’s our glowing center. We circle up, tell stories, hum weird songs.
Then—click—it’s off. Like magic.
5. Take Weird Breaks on the Way
We don’t just stop for bathrooms. We stop at playgrounds. It sounds silly, but those breaks let the kids burn energy and actually enjoy the drive.

Same goes for lakes—even if we’re not camping there, a couple of hours by the water is a win.
6. Bring One Fun Thing
I pack a toy RC truck that works on water and dirt. Every dad I camp with has bought one since.
Whether it’s that, a swing, or just a hammock (we always bring two to avoid fights), one fun extra can turn a regular trip into an unforgettable one.
7. Streamline Your Setup
I swapped out our soft top for a hard shell tent. It saves me 5 minutes—but that’s 5 minutes less the kids are wandering off.
Our table, chairs, stove, and fire pit all come out in the same order every time. Routine = calm. Especially at bedtime.
8. Know Your Why
This one’s not a gear hack—but it’s the most important. Why do we camp with our kids? For me, it’s curiosity, independence, and time away from screens.
When the trip gets hard (and it always does), remembering the why keeps me grounded.
One Last Thing
Camping with kids isn’t rocket science. It’s just chaos with a view. Skip the overplanning. Forget the perfect trip. Pack what you need. Make it fun. Laugh when it goes sideways.
That’s what they’ll remember. And honestly, so will you. Got a weird hack or a genius dad move? I’m all ears.
Let’s make the next trip even better.
